What is the Duolingo English Test?

The Duolingo English Test is a modern assessment of English proficiency  for today’s international students and institutions. The exam is available online upon request. There’s no need to make an appointment or travel to a testing center—you can take the test from the comfort of your own home using a computer and webcam.

The test is administered using adaptive computing technology, which means that the difficulty of the question is adjusted for each test-taker. The test also integrates a video interview and a writing sample that are sent  to an Institution along with your performance evaluation when you request to submit your results to your desired institutions.

Test Format

The exam portion of the Duolingo English Test contains a series of speaking, reading, writing, and listening exercises. This portion is scored. The second portion of the exam consists of a scored writing sample and an unscored speaking sample. In each section, the test taker will be given a prompt and must speak or write about those topics.

The exam tests your English speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in a single 1 hour session.

The test requires some security measures, so the test is administered in your home anywhere in the world where no one is to enter your closed door room during test.

The test is computer based, meaning you’ll have to read and listen to prompts and enter your answers into a computer.

The test measures what is called as “real life english”. In other words, they try to mimic what you’ll encounter in the real world as closely as possible. Some examples of how they do this is to include speakers with accents and use content from real lectures (instead of some made up script meant to be a lecture).

The test tries to integrate the different skills (speaking and writing, for example) as much as possible.
